I was interested in this topic originally because my favorite author is Adam Gidwitz, and he makes insanely good books synthesizing The Brothers Grimm stories together, and adding dark themes of reality but also life lessons. He makes reading stories amazing and I thought it would be a good idea if I tried to do that.
This project definitely could've been a million times better, and done a million times sooner. All that being said, I am still proud of the work I did while going through a rough time ending off the semester, and I think my synthesis is very well spoken and performed in my work.
I used synthesis in art by combining two different fairy tales into one nightmarish photoshoot. I researched the original Brothers Grimm stories and took the horror from those to mix with the childlike whimsy of Disney. I used the stories Sleeping Beauty and Snow White and took elements they both had in common to make SFX makeup and a dress. The green vomit is from both Sleeping Beauty and Snow White because they both "die" and are pronounced dead after eating something evil, but when a Prince kisses them, they magically wake up. The apple on the dress is from Snow White's vomit, and the bloody scratches are from Sleeping Beauty's wall of thorns. The undereye bags and blue fingertips show her suffocation while she was choking and dead.
For English I made a movie script based off the book, Cendrillon, which is a Caribbean cinderella story. The goal was to make an average teenage girl coming of age movie involving a princess, but cater it to Caribbean girls and teenagers. There are not enough movies for little kids of different cultures and countries. It has gotten better now with disney making movies solely about mexican teenage girls or asian american girls, but there are hundreds of other amazing races and places of origin that can be referenced and have movies made about them. I am synthesizing coming of age movies with The Caribbean Islands.
My history project is a children's book that synthesizes three different cultures and "countries." (The Caribbean Islands are not a country.) I took elements from each ethnicity that would educate people not of that racial origin and also provide representation for the people that are. They will read the book with their parents and see something mentioned that has never been talked about before in American books. Representation is very important, and it also just makes stories more interesting when you add in little hints. The book also includes different themes like feminism, racism, and child abuse because I think it is extremely important to educate your child on these topics while their young.
