My main inspiration was a show called Pose about the underground ballroom scene in New York. There are so many characters in that show that die from AIDS and they portrayed the confusion and fear of the time so well I thought I would research it. Another inspiration was that Mr. Grandi told me to watch a movie called Philidelphia which stars Tom Hanks so of course I had to, and it was an amazing film that inspired some of my art and a lot of my english portion. It really showed that anyone could get it, even rich lawyers who you thought were straight. It also shows the consequences of the disease other then just dying.
Good afternoon Senator Halloway.
Good afternoon Jakob.
Welcome back to the Los Angeles Times, you’ve been interviewed for this before, yes?
Indeed I have. This time it’s a much more opinionated topic, at least on my end.
Why is that?
This is a topic I’m very passionate about, I feel it’s my duty as a state senator to educate the public on what’s happening in the world regarding California. The mass hysteria that’s been happening can be easily preventable by these answers.
Since you are so educated on the subject, where did AIDS originate from and how can we stop it? I’m sure everyone is very concerned about what they can do to prevent the AIDS virus from affecting them.
Trust me, you won’t get anything as long as you behave in a God-given way. Homosexuals on the other hand are not, and that is why their super spreaders.
What is, by your definition, a “God-given way?”
Promoting abstinence is key. To behave in a god-given way is to push down your homosexual tendencies and practice abstinence. Condoms aren’t the problem, it’s the people being disrespectful and ignorant enough to continue having gay sex, that is the issue we need to address and eradicate.
Why do you think condoms don’t help? The virus is mainly spread through sex and blood transfusions. Vaginal, anal, it dosen’t matter sexually how you come into contact with a person with HIV, you will get it.
What does “mainly” even mean? It’s spread through gay sex. This virus only affects gay people, women and men who claim they got it through a blood transfusion are just trying to cover up that they had sex or exchanged bodily fluids with a homosexual.
Well, studies show that babies have been getting HIV from their mothers. What about when those babies grow up? What are they going to tell their future partners before they have sex? I don’t think all people getting HIV and AIDS are at fault.
Of course, it isn’t the child’s fault if they get it from their slut of a mother. What I’m concerned about are instances like, for example, a gay prostitute on the streets of Los Angeles spreading the disease to famous politicions I associate with. How am I supposed to know what they do after work? Prostitutes are largly to blame for the spread and are increasing in numbers as summer goes on. Female and male, if your having sex with eachother and practically soaking in the plague, I worry about the men you give this too daily, and then they give it to their wives, who then give it to their children.
What other things are you concerned about senator? What about the fact the president is doing nothing to address this situation? I know you’ve been in close proximity with him recently and I’d like to know what his thoughts are on this global pandemic. He must have some sort of plan to action.
I haven't heard him express concern. He clearly dosen’t seem to mind or care as much about the plague as other politicians, like me, but you have to take this into consideration Jakob. Most people don’t really care if homosexuals live or die. Like I said before, this virus is a curse from god to his children for betraying him and sleeping with the same sex. That is why only gay people can get it. I of course don’t care as much either I’ll admit, but when it comes to the health and saftey of the, well let’s say, “normal” citizens of America, I feel it’s my responsibility to assure them they are safe and give them the facts.
It’s hard to fathom the president not caring about a virus killing thousands of people, but I believe you Senator. There really has been no action to help the people dying of the virus, it’s a manic hysteria, but the president just sees it as a joke! Does the president, in other words, the White House, look on this as a great joke?
I believe they do. This is not a real concern that affects us, it affects a group of people that deserve to be dead anyway.
Let’s move on to Africa. Tell me why you think they are to blame, and what are they doing wrong to spread the virus further?
The virus had spread to humans from chimpanzees, now this wouldn’t have happened if Africans weren’t viciously hunting them and eating their meat and blood infected with AIDS. I’m not even trying to say it in a condescending way, it’s just the truth that they spread it and are to blame.
Well, the virus had traced back to the 1800s. The earliest known case of HIV in human blood is from a sample taken in 1959 from a man who’d died in Kinshasa in what was then the Belgian Congo. It could have happened to anyone if they had come into contact with those infected chimpanzees first. Including a white man.
Jakob, this is tribal, racial issue. Why would a white man get infected by them? The Africans were the ones brutally hunting them after all. They also continue to keep spreading it to other people to this day, they were the cause of this and still are. It’s clear to see they don’t care if American’s die, they only care about themselves. It is a selfish race of people.
Do you believe promoting abstinence is what will fix this?
I mean, if everyone in Africa stopped having sex of course it would stop spreading, but America and Africa have different ways of spreading the disease. America is homosexual based in the way of super spreading. African’s just love to have sex with everyone all the time!
This concludes our interview, thank you so much for your time Senator Halloway.
Of course!

His last words were
“Do you think I’m going to die?”
I told him, it’ll be okay, everything’s gonna be okay.
If I knew at that moment I would lose him forever
God, I would have said so much more
It’s funny how things play out in that way
How one moment you’re with the most priceless thing in the world
And the next you’re
alone
I wish I’d never known what it felt like
To lose some
one to this disease
This disease
This disease took my life
It took my son it took my soul it took my world
But the disease is not to blame
It’s just doing its job
I put the blame on you. I put the blame on everyone who ignored us
Everyone who watched us suffer and stood by
Stood by while my son died.
Not just my son but more sons, these sons:
Craig Louis
Robert Thomas
David Danielson
Donovin Brague
Jak Trevino
These are five names out of 700,000 that have died. Because people refuse to help we lost innocent sons, uncles, fathers, brothers, and husbands.
And don’t just listen. Don’t just hear me say these names.
Do something. Take action. Even if all you can do is educate yourself and treat an AIDS patient with human decency and respect, it’s better than standing around and doing nothing. We can prevent more deaths. Together.

I showed perspective with each of my portions through four different people's take on AIDS in the 80s and 90s. For history the point of view is through the perspective of a made up Californian state politician who is voicing his homophobic and racist opinions on the AIDS crisis and what everyone should do about it, the other point of view is the news reporter doing the interview, Jakob, a made up writer for the Los Angeles Times. These two perspectives are representing white privileged men feeling the need to voice their opinions confidently even when they know there are facts proven against them, and the voice responding to them saying "is this really accurate?" I also used quotes from a real news reporter advocating for people with AIDS and Ronald Reagon's press secretary at the time Larry Speakes during an interview. For english I used the point of view of a mother greiving the loss of her child and angry at no one helping them. The poem was inspired by the AIDS quilt and I used five names from one square of the AIDS quilt in it to show that it wasn't just her son that was died, it was thousands of sons. For art I did photography to show a prostitute with a drug addiction finding out he has AIDS and doing nothing about it, because there was no information or help they could get at that time. Prostitution is their line of work, and men paid more for them to forgo safe sex practices, none of them really cared about how it would affect other people because they were already worried if they were going to make it to the next day.
